Memory foam came about in the early 1970's when NASA funded an experimental project designed to produce a material that could help reduce the discomfort astronauts felt during lift-off. During the course of research, a new foam material, called visco elastic, was created that was capable of conforming to a person's shape and subsequently return to its own natural shape when weight was taken away. This foam allowed for the uniform distribution of body weight over the whole surface of the foam, swiftly adapting to any movements of the body. Tempur-Pedic introduced the first memory foam beds in 1992, amidst much fanfare.
A visco memory foam mattress is not what you would label as a "soft" mattress. It molds and contours to the body, and the contouring effect distributes that weight over more of the sleeping surface, thereby eliminating pressure points. On an average spring bed, pressure points can create discomfort and make you toss and turn, so memory foam's contouring characteristics will allow for a better night's sleep.
Another feature of this foam is the open cell composition, which allows the bed to breathe. Essentially, a memory foam bed will not retain your body heat and moisture, leaving the resting area comfortable the whole night.
Visco foam is highly resistant to mildew and bacteria. Since countless people suffer from allergies, visco can assist in improving your overall health and comfort by reducing the presence of these allergens in the bedroom.
A memory foam bed also works to decrease motion transfer between you and your spouse, so if one of you moves during the night, it will not rouse and disturb the other. Fewer disturbances from movement means a deeper, more peaceful sleep.
It's important to note that good quality memory foam beds won't require a box-spring under them for extra support. Though you can certainly order a platform base to increase the height of the bed, it's worth mentioning that the mattress should feel just as good resting on an even, concrete surface.
Additionally, sure to have a good look at the warranties that different companies offer and be wary of cheap imitations. You can't always be certain of the quality of memory foam from overseas, so be wary of foam mattresses not produced in the US.
