Waterloo Region Real Estate A Real Bargain
The Waterloo Region in south central Ontario is among the fastest developing and most economically vibrant districts in Canada. People considering moving to this community will find all the important big city opportunities you are likely to find in a bigger community such as Toronto minus the hyper fast pace, extensive time spent commuting and costly cost of living. The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is strategically located pretty much in the centre of Southwestern Ontario, approximately 70 mi or100 km from Toronto, 100 mi or 160 km from Buffalo, New York, and 185 miles or 300 kilometers from the U.S. border between Windsor and Detroit.
The main geographical feature of the Region is the Grand River that runs through many of the areas towns and cities and has been a major player in the development of the region.
According to the 2006 census, with 451,235 people, the Wateroo Region was the eleventh most populous census metropolitan area in Canada. The largest cities in the Region are Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge and it also includes numerous smaller towns and villages as well as a large and prosperous rural area.
Kitchener is the most populous community in the Regional municipality and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In 2006 the Kitchener's population was was just under 205,000. The City of Waterloo situated right next to Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. This does not include in excess of 20,000 temporary resident post-secondary students attending its universities and regional colleges. The two cities are located side-by-side and together are typically called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
Cambridge, the other major city in the area is found in the south eastern part of the region with a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the merging of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" foisted upon them by the Ontario provincial government.
In the first decade of the new millenium The Region of Waterloo is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing areas in Canada with some of the best agricultural land in North America, two highly regarded Universities, a very stable financial and insurance sector, diversified industrial production and a burgeoning high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and other spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
People settling in the Waterloo Region will find excellent employment opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also considerably less expensive than similar properties in other Ontario cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
The fact is, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban centre while being ideally situated to take advantage of the amenities of larger cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
